Basic Rules:

  1. Objective: The primary objective of Rummy is to form valid sets and sequences of cards in your hand and lay them down on the table.
  2. Deck: Rummy is typically played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Jokers may also be used as wild cards.
  3. Dealing: The dealer deals a specific number of cards to each player, typically 10 cards in a standard game.
  4. Melding: Players take turns to draw cards from the deck or the discard pile and then discard a card from their hand. They can form sets (three or four cards of the same rank) and sequences (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) in their hand.
  5. Going Out: Once a player has formed valid sets and sequences, they can declare or “go out” by placing their cards on the table. The other players then have one final turn to lay down their cards or add to the sets and sequences on the table.
  6. Scoring: Points are awarded based on the cards remaining in the other players’ hands when someone goes out. Face cards are typically worth 10 points, numbered cards are worth their face value, and Aces are worth 1 point.
  7. Winning: The player with the lowest score at the end of the game is declared the winner.

Variations:

  1. Indian Rummy: Also known as “Paplu” or “13 Card Rummy,” this variation is popular in India and is played with 13 cards.
  2. Gin Rummy: In Gin Rummy, players aim to form sets and sequences using all the cards in their hand. It is typically played with two players.
  3. Rummy 500: Rummy 500 is a variation of Rummy where players aim to reach a target score of 500 points.
  4. Kalooki (Kaluki): Kalooki is a Rummy variant played with wild cards and is popular in many countries, including Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

Rummy has endured through the ages due to its simple rules, strategic depth, and social aspect. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, making it a perfect choice for family gatherings, parties, or casual get-togethers.
